In the City of Vancouver, buildings contribute up to 54 percent of greenhouse gas emissions. This alarming statistic prompted the city to set ambitious goals to reduce carbon pollution by 50% by 2030 and become carbon neutral by 2050. Building to this standard is not just a choice; it’s a commitment to collectively combat climate change.
Passive House design principles necessitate walls that are six inches thicker than building codes. Triple-glazed windows are a standard feature. These buildings are engineered to maintain a comfortable 20 degrees Celsius during winter and a pleasant 25 degrees Celsius in summer. The results are astounding: these homes consume 90% less heating and cooling energy than conventional structures. This translates to energy cost savings ranging from 60-80%, offering more than just financial benefits.
