Passive House : Energy Efficiency in Vancouver.
Passive House, or Passivhaus, represents a global paradigm shift in the design and construction of energy-efficient homes. Born in Germany during the 1980s, this innovative concept has grown to be a renowned building standard with international recognition. Today, Canada is embracing this philosophy and embarking on multiple projects, coast to coast. True Mechanical, a leader in mechanical systems and innovation, is at the forefront of this movement, with three remarkable projects in Vancouver: The Peak, Orange Manor & Edward Byers House (Brightside Community Homes) and the Narrows.
What exactly is the Passive House Standard?
In the City of Vancouver, buildings contribute up to 54 percent of greenhouse gas emissions. This alarming statistic prompted the city to set ambitious goals to reduce carbon pollution by 50% by 2030 and become carbon neutral by 2050. Building to this standard is not just a choice; it’s a commitment to collectively combat climate change.
Passive House design principles necessitate walls that are six inches thicker than building codes. Triple-glazed windows are a standard feature. These buildings are engineered to maintain a comfortable 20 degrees Celsius during winter and a pleasant 25 degrees Celsius in summer. The results are astounding: these homes consume 90% less heating and cooling energy than conventional structures. This translates to energy cost savings ranging from 60-80%, offering more than just financial benefits.
High-Quality Air and Heat Recovery Ventilation
Passive House standards guarantee a living space free from draughts, cold spots, and overheating while providing a constant supply of fresh, clean air. This emphasis on high-quality air and heat recovery ventilation systems ensures that residents enjoy an environment free from pollen and dust, enhancing overall well-being.
Investing in Our Future
The heart of Passive House construction is sustainability. By designing homes that consume minimal energy, we are reducing utility bills and leaving a smaller carbon footprint. The approach is an investment in our future, fostering a greener and more eco-conscious society.
Our Passive House projects in Vancouver
The Peak:
Built to exacting standards, this project aligns with the City of Vancouver’s goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It offers residents year-round fresh indoor air quality and stable temperatures, contributing to a healthier and environmentally friendly home at reduced costs.
