In honour of Building Safety Month, we dedicate this post to our paramount concern: construction safety training that ensures everyone returns home safely each day. To achieve this, we adopt proactive measures and prioritize safety culture and awareness, rather than the old-school approach of reacting to incidents after they occur.

What is a safety culture?

Our safety culture encompasses shared attitudes, beliefs, and values regarding construction workplace safety. It’s about creating an environment where safety is prioritized at all levels of the organization, from the office to the field.

And rather than relying on traditional training methods like lectures in a classroom, our full-time, two-member safety team infuses self-awareness into safety procedures with a holistic perspective that considers safety from all angles.

We don’t treat safety as a separate or standalone function but as an integral part of day-to-day operations by surpassing the minimum safety standards outlined by WorkSafeBC and integrating safety into our daily operations. This holistic approach covers various aspects, including:

Training: We do a fantastic job of investing in our teams and ensuring there is no shortage of comprehensive and engaging training opportunities. In addition, our safety team is CoR certified, a partner incentive program that goes above and beyond the current legal requirements.

Employee Involvement: Our team actively participates in safety initiatives and decision-making processes, right down to the quality PPE we provide to our teams. We always encourage our teams to identify hazards, suggest improvements, and promote safe behaviours.
Health and Well-being: We prioritize mental and emotional well-being, promoting work-life balance, providing resources for stress management and mental health support, and creating a supportive and inclusive work environment.
Continuous Improvement: Our safety practices undergo regular evaluation and adjustment based on feedback and best practices.
Leadership Commitment: Our leadership plays a crucial role in fostering a safety culture by demonstrating commitment to safety, allocating resources, setting clear expectations, and holding individuals and teams accountable for safety performance.

Also, due to our focus on return-to-work planning, we have a much lower than average duration of claims. Return-to-work initiatives have proven to actually speed up recovery times and improve outcomes as our team members have purpose and are supported by their peers.

What can you do about construction site safety?

There are lots of courses you can take to improve your knowledge. All construction companies are part of the BC Construction Safety Alliance and they have an entire catalogue of courses here. Also, the Vancouver Regional Construction Association has online courses and links to partner programs here. Lastly, the Canadian Construction Association is where you’d go to get your Gold Seal Certification.
