Project Overview.

This award winning project for the Institute for Advanced Medical Isotopes (IAMI) is a major part of TRIUMF life sciences program for research into next-generation, life-saving medical isotopes and radiopharmaceuticals at UBC. The 2500 m2 IAMI facility, constructed on the TRIUMF campus, brings together interdisciplinary TRIUMF faculty and students with partners from academia, not-for-profits, government and industry for research into a diversity of medical isotopes for health research and clinical use.

IAMI will significantly increase British Columbia’s and Canada’s capacity for the sustainable and reliable production and distribution of medical isotopes. These include isotopes for the imaging and diagnosis of cancer and cardiovascular diseases, for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s research and for the development of new, targeted treatments for late-stage cancers. In 2023, the project was awarded gold status at the Vancouver Regional Construction Award for mechanical contracting projects over $5m.

Project Outcomes

We entered a Design Assist relationship with the builder and client to collaborate on bringing the cost in line with the budget and worked with the client to reduce the lab's working capacity while maintaining the highly sophisticated systems required for production.

To manage cost and construction timelines, our VDC department facilitated 3D-design collaboration for the entire project. During construction, our teams utilized their expertise to install and commission a high-quality system to the standards and guidelines outlined in our modelling. A large portion of the project was prefabricated off-site in our controlled shop environment.

“I've had the pleasure to work with True Mechanical through a few projects in the last decade as a Project Manager with Ventana Construction Corp. With the IAMI project for TRIUMF, we were able to see the extent True Mechanical was able to perform. They continued through a lengthy and complicated value engineering process with us and the IAMI team, contributing over $10m in savings. Along with their BIM expertise and trade co-ordination, they showed real collaboration throughout the entire process.”
